What is a Root Canal Treatment?
A root canal is one of the most common dental procedures performed, well over 14 million every year. This simple treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the need for dental implants or bridges.
To understand what a root canal does, you have to know a bit about your tooth’s anatomy.
When you look at your tooth in a mirror you’re only looking at the surface, or crown. The rest of the tooth that is underneath your gums is called the root. The tissue, nerves, and blood vessels surrounding the root form a pulp, which is susceptible to bacteria. Bacteria can occur from tooth decay, tooth fractures, gum disease, and other problems. If bacteria harm the pulp, your dentist may refer you to see us.
The job of the endodontist is to remove the diseased pulp. They’ll thoroughly clean out and seal the root canal system. Doing this will relieve your pain, prevent further infection, and save your tooth.
